The Joint BMC/BAMC Meeting
You have reached the home page of the Mathematics Colloquium an Applied Mathematics, which are to be jointly held in Edinburgh and organised by the Institute for Mathematical Sciences. The meeting is generously funded by the Mathematical Society.
In recent years, the Mathematics Colloquium and Applied Mathematics have been occasionally held jointly. The Joint Meeting will span 4 days and include a programme of plenary and other invited talks, focus sessions (special sessions and minisymposia), and contributed paper sessions. Each day will address a range of topics in pure and applied mathematics.
The joint meeting will take place from the morning of Tuesday, April 6 to shortly after noon, on a full moon day.
We are dedicated to bringing you up to the minute news on Mathematics Colloquium and Applied Mathematics. Mathematics is one of the greatest gifts of knowledge that we can give to our children.
Why You Might Not Be Able to Help Your Child with Their Math Homework-
Math concepts and ideas are constantly changing. Yes, some of the cores remain the same. Multiplication and Division are fairly straight forward. Addition and Subtraction we all have down in the first grade. At some point though your child’s academics may surpass what you remember for school. Add on to that the fact that advanced math concepts are constantly changing and you may be at a loss when you see your child’s work. The kicker is that even if you understand it quite well you may not be able to help because the way the kids are supposed to solve the problem. It is not just about getting the right answer but about how you get the right answer and the ways to solving the problem are varied sometimes. If the teacher wants the child to learn it a specific way allow the child to do so. It may make you crazy because you know that your way is easier or makes more sense, but you do not want your student to be out in the cold when the class is going over problems together. So as hard as it is bite your tongue and maybe you will even learn something new.
Do you love math? Consider these careers.
Math may seem unnecessary to you or your child. People often think “well I am not going to be an accountant so why do I need to learn this?” Math though is used in more industries than most people realize. Math is used in landscaping to measure and plot landscape beds. Math is used in cooking to determine measurements and the optimal amount of yeast to grow bread. Math is used in fashion for measurements for sewing. Math is used in cosmetics to determine formulas to create the mascara that can offer the longest lashes. No matter what field you or your child plan to go into you can be sure that math skills will give an added edge.
